One of the weirdest things I'm noticing so far: the feeling of "full" no longer feels the same. I'm realizing how much I have used carbs to help me feel like I've eaten enough. When you eat lots of bread or lots of sugar, you eventually reach a point where it feels like everything just sits in your digestion system. And you feel full. Stretched, almost. And over the last couple days, it has constantly felt like I haven't quite eaten enough, even though I know I have. Food can keep moving without all that flour and sugar to slow down the process. Does that make sense? I probably have consumed tons of empty calories simply to try and reach that point of fullness.
Anyway, today I'm going to highlight the first of many books I've read on my food journey to this point. I grew up in a stereotypical American house, concerning food. French fries, hamburgers, pasta, white bread, cream of something soup with cheese and rice. Lots of bread, lots of meat, lots of sugar, not a lot of vegetables and such. A year after I graduated from college, I was home for the summer. I heard a lesson taught in church by a woman who I had known for years. And some of the things she discussed caught my attention. After the lesson, I asked her about her thoughts on food and fasting and such. She recommended this book: Fit for Life. She believed this book was true, true, true.
Years later, I'm not sure what I think about this book and don't think I could live by what it recommends. (It talks about food combination, eliminating dairy and meat, and only eating fruit until noon). But this was the book that made me realize what I ate affected how I felt. That honestly had never occurred to me before. It's also the book that caused me to try vegetarianism for two years. Being a vegetarian was a really valuable experience for me and taught me a lot about myself and food. This book was the beginning of my fascination with food and how our bodies use it to do the amazing things they do.
PS. I totally spooned me today. Sugar-free yumminess is mine.

I've read a book similar to that and I think those people are CRAZY!! Your body really needs protein to be healthy and it is very difficult to get 'balanced' proteins without meat and dairy. I would love to try the vegetarian thing, but I'm afraid my husband would KILL me. Looks like you're doing great so far. Keep it up!
You look so much like your mom in that picture.
I remember reading that book ages ago (I think you might have been the one that lent it to me) I think the only thing I have tried from it is the only fruit before lunch thing, and the few times I have been able to it's seemed to help my energy level. Maybe I should try that again sometime...
